Mar del Plata´s Atlantic coastline and its different contours from Santa Clara del Mar to the cliffs southwards, provide fishermen with an excellent catch of fish.
From the beaches, rock piers, jetties or cliffs; during the day or night; in the city centre or on the outskirts, fishing enthusiasts will be widely satisfied. Drums, parona leatherjacks, silver sides, sharks and flounders can be caught all year long.
Offshore Fishing
The city offers excellent nautical facilities for sport fishermen who own crafts; boat berths, launch sites, parking for vehicles and boat trailers, clubs, etc.
Near the coast, shortly after departure, comfortable hired crafts led by experienced guides, head directly where the schools are. (half-day trip)
Although fishing is practised throughout the year, though the best time to do it is during November and December. The species that predominate during summer time are drum, weakfish, skate, eagle ray, Patagonian smooth hound, shark and Argentinean conger. Winter time is the perfect season for those who like fishing silver sides.
Deep-sea fishing
This is undoubtedly the best option when it comes to fishing along the Argentinean coastline.
Fully equipped crafts with modern equipment like satellite navigation, depth sounders and radar, assure the exact depth and location of the prey. (full-day trip)
Fishing spots vary in depth from 65 to 197 feet. The one called “Banco Patria” is worth mentioning.
There is no big difference among seasons. Sea salmons, sea basses and wreckfishes get very large in size and can be caught in any time of the year. The yellowtail amberjacks and little tunnies, two of the fiercest species in our sea, arrive during March, April and May.
Fly Fishing – Fishing with artificial lures
A variety of vessels which transport very few passengers drop anchor in areas where depth reaches no more than 50 feet. These vessels offer fishermen the opportunity to feel the sport to the fullest by practising bait casting, spinning or fly casting using light tackle. Spinning and trolling are also used to catch little tunnies, yellowtail amberjacks, blue fish and parona leatherjacks.
These species offer fascinating fights allowing sport fishermen to enjoy an exciting experience.
En Cotos / In Preserves
Just a few miles from Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata offers a fishing preserve where trout can be caught throughout the year with no closed season.
‘Puerta del Abra’ complex consists of six interconnected artificial lakes. It is the ideal place for fly fishing beginners to learn how to throw lines for fishing rainbow trout and also, techniques with streamers, nymphs and dry flies.
Coarse fishing: Lakes and streams
Only 10 miles from the city centre, ‘Laguna de los Padres’ provides sport fishermen with easy access and suitable facilities such as boat hire. It is a small lake, in which an estimate of 25 silver sides, is reached easily.
Laguna La Brava’ and ‘Laguna Mar Chiquita’ are also worth visiting.
Streams are the right place to catch freshwater species (catfish, silver sides, etc.).
